Why Used Cars Dealers Have The Upper Hand?

By: Glen Crawford

All USA-based used car dealers are required to follow the guidelines contained in the 'Used Car Rule' publication, issued by the Fair Trade Commission. The only relaxation being, that if they sell less than 5 cars in a calendar year, they are not treated as used cars dealerships, and don't have to abide by these laws.

The basic responsibility of used car dealerships is to position a buyer's sign that would be adjacent to the vehicle offered for sale that states 'Used car for sale'. It must have a prominent position on or inside the vehicle so the buyer could take a look and immediately notice and use it for the purpose of buying.

Relevant information about the car for sale is displayed on a sign placed on the car, or inside on the windshield. It contains the following data: year of manufacturing, price, model name and its identification number. Plus, any relevant info can be added there, that will help in better communication between both parties. Including dealership's contact details is obligatory.

Additionally, the guide form needs to precisely describe any extras and accessories that the car will be sold with. If any detrimental factors are present, that could affect buyer's decision, like excessively used parts and elements, they too should be brought to the prospective buyer's attention. According to National Automobile Dealers Association, dealership is responsible for advising interested parties if the car comes with insurance cover, registration, paid warranty services, etc.

Buyer should be able to check if the vehicle identification number of the car offered for sale is the same as that stated on the title. Dealership should make sure, that the ownership title is clear.

Nowadays, used car dealers tend to group in chains of dealerships. This is often dictated by the commonality of the make they sell, or for the economical interests. Indeed, used car dealers can better serve customers by exchanging relevant information about the stocks of used vehicles they have. Online presence makes it even easier. Members of a dealership group have their used cars available for sale, listed on one website. There the prospective customer can browse and select his/her favorite unit.

All used car dealers have to be dully licensed by the state authorities, and adhere to the relevant state and federal laws and regulations. All this is apart from the usually coveted membership in their professional organization NADA. Although there may be some paper work involved, and the bureaucracy may feel stifling at times, the benefits to the customers are enormous.

It's all about getting thee best deal! From the buyer's perspective, all used cars dealerships have their stock seriously overpriced. But, the way the seller sees it is quite opposite. He thinks that buyers try to get an unrealistic bargain, and drive the selling price down too far, hence depriving the dealer of his profits. As always the truth lies somewhere in-between. The great majority of used car dealers are very honest and hard working people. Hopefully, you'll meet one of them when searching for your next set of wheels.
