So it's time for you to buy a new sofa. Is it something that has to be more difficult than going to the furniture store and pointing to one and saying, "I want that"? Yes, or no. When you make any purchase, and something as big as a sofa, you want to do some homework and put some thought into it so that you get the best you can for your hard earned money. Most people have the same sofa somewhere between 5 and 8 years. That's longer than some people own a car. If you're going to be best friends with your sofa for that length of time put a bit of consideration into your decision so you'll be happy with it. There isn't any reason to buy the most expensive sofa you see, nor should you buy the cheapest. How are you going to be using this sofa? A sofa that you'd put into a busy family room isn't necessarily the one you'd put into a formal rarely used living room. Also, if you're buying a sofa you are only planning on keeping 2 to 3 years don't buy expensive. If you're buying a sofa for your child to use in a dorm room, buy a sturdy but cheap sofa. Did you know that some sofas come with reclining seats? They're great, especially in smaller rooms where you can't have lots of pieces of furniture. Do you want a sofa with back cushions attached or loose pillows? Both will give different levels of support and will look different. Do you need a convertible, or sleeper sofa? If you have overnight guests you should consider this. Perhaps you should look into a sectional sofa if you need lots of seating for a family room or living room. Some sectional sofas also have built in recliners and side tables. From a design style sofas are broken down into two groups, contemporary and traditional, that's fairly standard. Within each of these two categories there are hundreds of styles. Some people like to mix it up a bit and put a more traditional sofa within a modern setting. There is no firm set rule.Of course it's you home and you should mix and match the sofa with furniture that suits you. Some people put two sofas in a living room or family room or use a sectional sofa. Your choice of fabric can add hundreds of dollars to the final price of a sofa. You can choose from cotton or satin or silk fabrics or hundreds of others. You don't always need premium fabric on a sofa, but we will suggest that whatever fabric you choose you get factory applied fabric protectant when it is offered. The after market sprays you put on yourself do not work nearly as well and do not come with a guarantee. Some people put blankets or towels over their sofa to protect the fabric from kids or pets. If you must do this please use a fitted sofa cover, it looks much better on your sofa. So what type of fabric will go with your design? The options are endless. If you already have good furniture, say arms chairs or a recliner in your living room or family room that you are planning to keep you may want to go with a fabric for your new sofa that goes well with the furniture you have. Most people choose bright bold geometric fabric patterns to use on contemporary (modern) sofas. Floral fabrics are usually seen on more overstuffed casual sofas. A leather sofa is always a consideration. Leather lasts like iron and needs minimal care. As with any sofa you'll find differences in prices of leather sofas based on the grade of leather used. Flawless leather is hard to find in nature, so premium flawless leather sofas tend to be more expensive than sofas made with scarred leather. Scarred leather wears as well as premium flawless leather. The most important piece of choosing a sofa is it's comfort. We'd suggest that you never purchase a sofa without sitting in it first. What' comfortable to one person isn't necessarily comfortable to another. There are lots of considerations, some obvious and some not. An obvious consideration would be how firm is the seat? Here is something that is not an obvious consideration, how deep is the seat? Are the pillows soft? Are the pillows attached? Sit on it. Lie down on it. Make sure that the sofa is comfortable for you.
