I recently read a newsletter by Howard Ruff in which he described the crocodile attack that claimed the most human lives. It happend on February 19, 1945 when a unit of the Imperial Japanese Army was guarding a stronghold on the Burmese island of Ramree and was outmaneuvered by a British Naval force. To escape, the soldiers had to cross 10 miles of crocodile infested mangrove swamps. Of the original 1,000 Japanese soldiers, only 20 survived. After reading this story, I was dumb founded. And I began wondering about the crocodile infested mangrove swamps that exist in our daily lives. In order to achieve the success we're after in our lives, what are the crocodile like challenges we must equip ourselves to overcome? I believe the ugliest and the baddest of the crocodiles are the crocodiles that lurk in our own minds. Specifically, they are the self limiting beliefs and other thoughts that don't serve us, but which we insist on hanging onto. I'm willing to bet that each of us has thousands of self limiting beliefs that we buy into every day. Often without even realizing that's what we are doing. When considering what it takes to be successful, just imagine what it must have taken for those 20 surviving Japanese soldiers to make their way to the other side of the swamps. How did they manage to avoid being eaten? If you are to make our way across the swamps, you must trust in your belief with a laser beam like focus on a vision and goals which are larger than yourself An then you must follow through with absolute persistence. You will discover a magical moment where you will finally truly believe is what is possible and what you can achieve - far beyond anything you previously may have considered. When you have breakthrough success in a new venture (be it a home business, a new project, venture or otherwise), this is often what you experience . You may have started out doing what you knew you had to do simply because you saw a process that made logical sense to you and you see an opportunity that is so attractive and appealing. But as the results begin manifesting, you reach a tipping point and are finally able to believe completely in what you can do. Those lingering doubts vanish. The progress you are making towards your goals is now fully visible and soon you 've created a vision larger than yourself that you believe unequivocally. This is when everything explodes exponentially. Just imagine the degree of doubt those 20 surviving soldiers would have had to overcome and how impenetrable their belief in their ability to cross the mangroves had to be in order for them to survive. Consider what the spectacle of the feeding frenzy amongst the crocodiles must have looked and sounded like and the degree of fear and self limiting beliefs each soldier had to overcome. And think about the degree of commitment and follow-through that was necessary to make it to the other side. There was no room for hesitation - everything relied upon instant decisions and follow-through if they were to survive. Just as few of the soldiers survived, so too do few people ever survive the crossing of the infested mangroves in their minds that would enable them to live out their dreams and goals. For those that do, it is because of their tremendous focus and vision, their absolute belief in that vision, and their persist without exception follow-through towards their dreams. These are the basic ingredients which can be used to determine the thoughts we choose, the beliefs we foster, and the actions we take, which of course ultimately define the path to our own success. And these ingredients are available to each of us. There is no shortage of tremendous opportunities and enormous waves of momentum that we can ride. Opportunities are in abundance everywhere. But in order to catch a wave, each of us needs to be ready to swim out to it. And it is only through our own clarity of vision, depth of belief, and persistence that we will get there. If 20 Japanese soldiers were able to cross 10 miles of mangrove swamps and overcome thousands of crocodiles, while 980 comrades were eaten, I have absolutely no doubt that any of us can navigate the swamps in our mind and achieve anything we choose to achieve. Anything can be achieved except to the extent to which we impose limits upon ourselves. By surrounding yourself with like minded people who hold th same depth of belief and vision as you have, you will quickly be able to leverage the strength and support of an entire team. So never, ever find reason to put limits upon yourself. So concquer those self limiting beliefs, stare down the crocodiles, and keep on swimming!
