HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that is responsible for AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a deadly disease which decreases the immunity of the body affecting the health leading to a series of diseases. HIV by itself is not an illness and does not instantly lead to AIDS. An HIV-infected person can lead a healthy life for several years provided if he/she does not develops AIDS. A person can get infected with HIV through the different routes like Unprotected sex, Sharing of needles, Unsafe blood, Improperly sterilized hospital tools. An expected mother if having HIV is sure to transmit it to the Child. How sad it is for the baby still not born will have restricted life span. Many people do not develop any symptoms when they first become infected with HIV and it becomes too late before one comes to know. Some people, however, get a flu-like illness within three to six weeks after exposure to the virus and this type of illness, called Acute HIV Syndrome, is accompanied with fever, headache, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea and enlarged lymph nodes. In the early stages of infection, HIV often causes no symptoms and the infection can be diagnosed only by testing a person's blood through two tests that are available to diagnose HIV infection. Among the two blood test-one test that looks for the presence of antibodies produced by the body in response to HIV and the other that looks for the virus itself. Till recently, there is no conclusive treatment to eradicate HIV from the body; however, timely treatment of opportunistic infections can keep one healthy and allow him /her to survive for many years. The commonly available treatment for AIDS is the treatment against deadly infections. The struggle to survive by the HIV patients during the last two decades has shown that HIV is not the "end of the world" and that there is good quality life for several more years if the infected person is bearing a positive attitude, conscious about health, and keeping in mind one's vulnerability to diseases, is found to be very useful for a great recovery. It is sad that that there is no effective vaccine and no cure for HIV, the only way to protect oneself is prevention. An old proverb "Prevention is better than cure" will work well in this case. People should either avoid having sex with multiple partners or use latex condoms polyurethane condoms, during sex. No reported cases has been found due to Masturbation, Touching, massage, body rubbing, Kissing, Oral sex on a man with a condom, Not sharing drug injecting, body piercing instruments, needles, syringes, Using properly sterilized hospital tools.
