Fat burning soup diets such as the cabbage soup diet have been described as the ultimate fad diets, promising huge weight loss in just days. Just how realistic are these fat burning soup diets and do they really hold their weight? After becoming popular in the 1980s, the cabbage soup diet is now circulated all over the Internet and as a result is popular still to this day. In fact, the actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has been known to use this fat burning soup diet to lose weight. Fat burning soup diets work by having you replace your entire diet with a low-calorie soup and a few other specific foods. It’s claimed that the soup itself has fat burning properties, but it’s widely accepted that any weight loss from such diets come as result of the very low calorie consumption, estimated to be at 800 to 1000 calories. Am I saying that these fat burning soup diets work for weight loss? Well, my answer is yes and no. The cabbage soup diet, for example, has been used by many people for short-term weight loss and is seemingly effective. However, when you take a closer look you realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side. You see, when you drastically lower your calories and the amount of carbohydrates you consume your body will initially respond by dropping a large amount of weight, but this is not fat. Instead you will be losing water and dehydrating yourself, resulting in you feeling weak, lacking concentration, having dizzy spells and even fainting if your blood sugar level drops too far. What’s more, any water weight you lose is temporary and regained immediately when you go back to eating normally. If you thought that the 10 pounds you’re losing would be fat, then I’m sorry to disappoint you but that’s nothing but an illusion. You’ll also find that in addition to water, you will burn muscle tissue too which will slow down your metabolism and make it easier for you to gain more fat. Along with a slower metabolism, you will also have to battle with the fact that you actually encourage your body to hang on to fat reserves when you drastically lower the number of calories you consume. In addition to everything I’ve mentioned, you also have to take into account the fact that fat burning soup diets can have high levels of sodium and MSG (monosodium glutamate) and leave you lacking in essential nutrients including protein, calcium and essential fatty acids, as well as some necessary vitamins and minerals. Another thing to bear in mind is that exercising while on fat-burning soup diet could have adverse effects due to the fact that you consume so few calories compared to what the body requires for healthy functioning. In fact, if you take part in strength or resistance training such as lifting weights, this could cause even greater muscle loss since you do not have the adequate protein to repair and rebuild the muscle. To conclude, I would strongly recommend against fat burning soup diets such as the cabbage soup diet since it is a very low calorie diet which has been shown to be ineffective for losing fat. On top of that, as with any low calorie diet you hamper your long-term weight and sacrifice your health to boot.
