Dating Online: Everyone Is Doing It These Days

By: Donald Blake

They are all advertising all over the net. Everywhere you look, there is an advertisement. This is especially true coming up to Valentine's Day. Ads like "Free Online Dating" and "Don't Be Alone On Valentine's". There are many different types of dating websites these days. Many of these dating sites specialise in different segments of the market. They might specialise in uniformed workers like army and police, or a particular sexual orientation or age group. There are even sites specialising in certain religions. It is not discrimination. It is simply a way of grouping like-minded individuals together to improve their success rate.

There are many advantages to online dating. Anonymity is perceived as being one of the main advantages. If you lack confidence and find it hard to approach the opposite sex, it is the ideal way to go about it. There are no hard feelings when you are rejected online. You just move on to the next member. In fact, it does your ego a power of good to see so many people taking an interest in your profile, even if they don't look for a date. Your profile will be reviewed by many of the members and they contact you or they don't. You will not know who they are and they will not know who you are. You use a nickname when you sign up and you only give your real name to the website when you fill out the form. The other members of the dating site only ever know you by the nickname you chose to use. They will never know who you are unless you tell them.

Before you say it, I will. Of course, if you send in your photo you lose your anonymity. At least you lose some of it. Only the people who know your face will know who "FrogPrince" or "Barbie" is. Anyway, if you know them it does not matter. They came to the dating site for the same reason you did. So do you really need to concern yourself with anonymity? And, isn't the reward worth the risk? Have you ever gone to a dance with a bag over your head in case anyone saw you? I don't think so. The human race, longs for love, companionship and friendship or even just company. All of these are potentially yours when you join a dating site.

Most dating sites these days have either a chat room or a messaging system, which enables the members to communicate with each other before they decide whether they want to meet. This gives members the opportunity to "size each other up" before arranging a date or giving out any information. After all, it can be difficult for some people to make a decision based on the profile alone.

Important eliminations can be made using the information in the profile though. For example if you have decided that there is no way that, you would ever date a smoker or a drinker or a blonde or some other factor, you will be able to specify this in your profile and in your searches on the site. When you go to a dance, you do not know anything about the person you are with until you have known them for some time. The dating site ensures that you have the opportunity to discover much about the person before the first date.

By the way, if you are a member of a dating site, the vast majority of people who visit dating sites spend most of their time browsing the profiles with photos. So, if you have not made the effort and submitted a photo, you will only get a date by sheer luck. Get your friends to choose which photo you use. It is always very difficult to be objective enough to choose the right picture ourselves, the one that will give the impression we want. It does not matter if you think you are too plain for anyone to like the look of you. There are always flocks of people who think that you are the one for them. After all, not everyone has the same taste, and as they used to say in the old days, "There's a lid for every pot". It is just a matter of finding your lid. The photo is simply an opportunity for people to make some kind of evaluation of the person they might want to meet. They want to know that you are not going to attack and rob them as soon as you meet. So use a photo with a smile. Even if your normal expression would stop a clock.
