Customer Contact Wins Sales

By: Jeff

Human memories are frail things. Where'd I put my keys? What is that guy's name? Why didn't I bookmark that great website?!?!?

If you're an active or aspiring internet marketer that last example is not just a display of memory's failings, but of your failure to properly hook the prospective customer. As a marketer, it's your job to create enough interest in your visitors that they either become a customer right on the spot, or they remember to come back later and buy something.

Now, most people in my position don't start out by calling their reader a failure. But a spade is a spade, if you're failed then you need to recognize it and start learning how to succeed. Fortunately, success is easier than you think. To the same extent that memory cannot be counted on, human nature can be.

What is something that everyone wants? Free stuff. We're all suckers for a giveaway. Studies have shown that over 50% of people will tell you the password they use to protect their online bank account (really!!!) for a simple reward. Since we're all honest people here, we don't want to know people's bank account password. In fact, all we want is their email address.

If you're not already capturing email addresses from your visitors, start doing it right now. Get an auto-responder account, set up a simple campaign, and start collecting email addresses. You can offer to email people when you update your website. That's a convenient service that will get a few people to sign up.

If you want more people to give you their email address, then up the ante a bit. Try giving away something useful (like an eBook) that is relevant to your website. Even better, write the eBook yourself and put hyperlinks back to your website in it. Get creative here. If you want to build a customer list, the best way to do it is giving away something in exchange for an email address.

Do you really need the email addresses? Of course you do. Remember my opening commentary about human memory? What if your giveaway was enticing enough to cause 50% of those casual surfers (the ones who don't buy anything but intend to return) to sign up for your mailing list? First of all, they'd be a lot more likely to remember to go back to your website. Now they've seen your URL when they first went to your site, when they received the introductory email from your mailing list, and they see your URL in the freebie you gave them. But that's not the best part.

How many additional sales would you get if you could periodically reach out to all your casual surfers and remind them of the exciting products being sold at your website? How many repeat customers could you create by taking your website beyond the WWW and extending into people's inboxes? Maybe it IS worth 2-3 hours to write a relevant eBook to help drive your email signups.

It's not much more work than simply building a website. Every time you "touch" a potential customer, your chance of making a sale goes up. We are fortunate to have the tools to contact ALL of our potential customers with zero incremental effort. It would be wasteful, and a failure, to not take advantage of them.
