Slimline Dishwashers In contrast to ‘full-size’ dishwasher models, ‘Slimline’ offerings are compact in size and can fit into most kitchens or utility rooms fairly easily. These dishwashers are ideal for smaller households where there are only one or two members in the family. Slimline models however use more water and energy pro rata than do their full-size counterparts. The basic features of the slimline models are similar to those you would find in any regular dishwasher. Types of Slimline Machines Slimline dishwashers come in both integrated and free standing variants. The integrated models can be concealed behind a fascia or can be located right next to your sink or close to another water inlet in your kitchen, while the free standing models are portable machines that do not need any installation. The latter are suitable for rented homes or flats where space may be a constraining factor. Dimensions and Capacity Slimline dishwashers are narrower than full sized dishwasher models, being usually around 45 cm wide and can generally accommodate around 9 place settings. Noise The noise generated by the dishwasher when it is in operation, is measured in decibels. A noise level of under 45 db is four times quieter than that of a 55 db machine. Energy Saving Tips If you go for a Slimline dishwasher, consider its energy saving features. Irrespective of the type of machine you use, overall energy consumption will largely depend on the way in which you use your machine. • Avoid rinsing dishes under the hot water tap, just scour them if needed prior to loading. • Load the dishwasher fully before running it. • Use ‘off-peak’ electricity if available. Programme Options Slimline dishwashers are likely to come with several programme options such as quick wash, economy wash, fragile wash, intensive wash programmes, depending on the model chosen. Some dishwashers have additional features such as timer delay, fuzzy logic, flexible loading baskets, customised holders and safety options. When you select a dishwasher for the home, make sure that it meets all your specific requirements. Temperature A Slimline dishwasher should have a temperature setting that goes up to a maximum of 55 degrees, as any rise in temperature above that will only serve to unduly increase energy consumption. For the same reason, it is best that you avoid using the drying cycle where you can, because the drying cycle requires temperatures above 55 degrees for the drying process to work. Maintenance A well built, well maintained Slimline dishwasher will last for many years. The cleaning performance is likely to be affected if the water is hard. Dishwasher Salts are used to help soften the water flowing through the machine. Rinse Aid is used to reduce the drying time and helps retain the sheen of dishes and plates. Detergents meant for use in dishwashers typically come in powder, tablet or liquid form including multi-function 3-in-1 tablets. You can even use a dishwasher freshener to avoid the build up of unpleasant odours in the machine. Use a dishwasher cleaner periodically to remove any debris that may have collected in the filters. Energy Ratings All domestic appliances are rated on the basis of performance and energy efficiency. The rating is on a scale of A to G, with A being the most efficient machine and G the least efficient. If your machine is very energy efficient, you should be able to save quite a bit on the running expenses but the initial purchase cost is likely to be higher, reflecting the additional technology needed to achieve the efficiency enhancements. Price and Warranty The standard price of a basic Slimline dishwasher will range from £200 upwards, depending on the advanced features and programmes you opt for. The warranty period in most cases is 12 months. Some manufacturers offer an extended warranty period, but check for the labour costs and call-out charges for minor repairs which might be rather steep if the warranty forces you to use the manufacturer’s own service agents. More Dishwashing Tips The following are some additional tips for getting the best washing results:- • Place the most soiled dishes at the centre of the machine as they will get rinsed better than the dishes placed in the periphery. • Never place dishes made of different metals next to each other. • Load the machine to full capacity, but never overload it or you may end up re-washing some items. • Never wash utensils made of wood, disposable plastics or china painted in gold or silver, in your machine. • Avoid washing ashtrays, because the ash is insoluble in water and will be deposited on your plates. Conclusion Dishwashers constitute a long term investment so it is wise to exercise some caution while selecting one for the home. There is a huge range of models in the current market, but the convenience and compactness of a slimline dishwasher are hard to match, particularly if your family is small and your washing requirements are minimal.
