The Outer Banks in North Carolina is roughly 60 miles of sun-drenched, fun-filled beaches offering the perfect setting for nearly every type of vacation activity. The following is an overview of this postcard region of North Carolina. The Outer Banks Region is made up by the Currituck, Dare, and Hyde counties.

The Outer Banks is a string of long, lithe barrier islands that fringe northeastern North Carolina. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and North Carolina coast, many feel the area’s best qualities are their isolation from mainland yet the Outer Banks is easily accessibility via bridges and ferries.

The Outer Banks consists of over one hundred miles of beaches which are often much less crowded than the many other popular East Coast vacation destinations. The most popular areas of the Outer banks are Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, Nags Head, Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke. Each of these areas has its own distinct character and all have great family oriented activities.

The Outer Banks was a major player in age of flight. As many know, on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers launched the first powered flight on the Kitty Hawk region of the Outer Banks. The Wright Brothers National Memorial provides daily tours which include overviews on how the brothers developed their successful airplane as well as demonstrations of the airplanes control system from a replica of the original airplane.

The Outer Banks is also home to the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the United States. The light house was erected in 1803, but was moved inland in 1999 to protect the lighthouse from coastal erosion. Tours are provided daily of the lighthouse.

Weather on the Outer Banks is perfect during popular vacation months. Daytime temperatures average in the upper 80s during peak vacation times with less than six inches of rain per month during most months. Average evening temperatures are in the 50s during summer months. The Outer Banks island location provides a calming and cooling breeze through out the day.

The Outer Banks offers terrific opportunities for fun and adventure. Vacationers on the Outer Banks can enjoy air tours, biking, camping, fishing, golfing, hang gliding, hiking, surfing and many other water activities including jetskiing and windsurfing rentals. One other very popular activity is touring the Northern parts of the Outer Banks to view the wild horses that roam those parts of the region.

Visitors of the Outer Banks will also find the shopping and relaxing spas on the Outer Banks to be some of the best in the Southeast. The Outer Banks has everything from specialized boutiques to factory outlet stores.

One can not visit the Outer Banks without trying one of the over 160 restaurants in the region. Cuisines include everything from the popular fresh seafood, to French, Italian as well as classic steak houses. There is something to satisfy even the pickiest vacationer on the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks accommodations include some of the biggest and most beautiful vacation home rentals on the east coast.
